Cullaloe LNR, 14/07/2017

An open night at Cullaloe with some guests and four MV traps run from two generators. Weather started with some drizzle which cleared to leave perfect conditions and a list which may have run to 100 if all the micros could have been done!

After a quick review 23 species (so far) were added to the reserve list - a phenomenal leap of over 10% of the reserve's current list. Additions:

07/04/2017 - Cullaloe LNR (Small Quaker)

A rare visit to Cullaloe this year for the first of two "public" moth trapping events. A good time to visit as April has been underdone moth-wise. As a result three new additions on the moth front and one new wasp, in addition to a spider that wasn't recorded for 15 years.

Three traps were run, each adding one species to the list. Small Quakers were numerous at the pines while a second MV at the spillway produced one Twin-spotted Quaker. The third addition came from an actinic heath trap at the filter beds - Double-striped Pug. Only 7 species of moth were found on the night so that's a pretty good hit rate!

Also at the pines were two Ophion obscuratus wasps. A female wolf spider - Trochosa terricola - was caught pathside as its eyes reflected the torchlight.

A good selection of species for only a couple of hours between 10 and midnight, with a small handful of new ones adding to the reserve moth list - my favourites being Barred Yellow and Bramble Shoot Moth. Ghost Moth was also a nice new one, but one I've seen lots of elsewhere

After watching the temperature dial drop as the moon shone in a clear sky disaster struck as it turned out the generator had stopped (lack of petrol) and the light gone out. Not much of a haul

An overnight heath trap in the birches and a brief head torch session at the one Salix with workable catkins produces two new species for the reserve and a Lepidoptera total now finally at 200! the Yellow Horned was also new for NT18, just sneaking in time for the atlas at its last chance
