Cullaloe 23rd May 2015

(Cross posting from Cataloguing Cullaloe)

A good night for mothing with cloud covering after a sunny day and keeping the air warmish. We ran four traps- three MV Robinsons and a heath trap. A couple of new species for the reserve and one for me.

Brown Silver-lines were abundant

Yellow-barred brindle from Holly flowers

Flame Shoulder at the filter beds

Small Phoenix at the filter beds

Clouded Silver

One of two Lunar Thorns

A nice one - Elephant Hawk Moth

Common White Wave

Cold

Another night of zero moths in the domestic moth trap. Not the best place in the world for moths, but still ... 5 degrees. Not even a compensatory beetle.

One micro swept at Cullaloe this morning, so something to look at at least

Emperor!

On a horrible overcast day I decided to bash fir trees for ladybirds. As I was preparing to beat a pine I noticed a shape that didn't look very pine-ish. In fact it looked quite moth-ish ...

Hill of Beath, 6th March

New 30Ah battery acquired so trap run overnight on a cold night. Only one moth trapped (and still present in the morning) - a Clouded Drab. To me they always resemble buffaloes from head on

Cullaloe 4-5 March, 2015

Without moth trap, poking around in Sallow catkins with a headtorch. Also scattered around the place and netted were a few Agonopterix ocellana (new for the reserve).

On the Sallows ... Common Quaker and Hebrew Character. Not photographed was also a single Chestnut. MIght have been worth spending some more time, but I only gave it an hour and a quick couple of tours up and down the path. Looking forward to more willow catkins opening up for further headtorch fun.
